Hello Guy, I am heavily considering upgrading from 12” 3D Reference Arm to 12” FatBoy unipivot. May I ask the following:

1) Was there a noticeable sound improvement?
2) How does the new counterweight work. Is it a smooth turning counterweight that allows smooth fine tuning?

Very interested

I have a Reference 12-3D Uni and a Fatboy 12-Gimbal mounted on the same table. I have a lot of experience with the Uni Fatboy but have not compared it directly to the Reference 12-3D.

Hello BRF, May I ask how the micrometer type counterweight works? Does it give very fine tuning of weight? Also May I ask if you perceive FatBoy gimballed is an upgrade over 3D reference ? May I ask your thoughts of the differences?

Best,

The Fatboy counter weight adjustment is a pleasure to use, extremely easy to dial in small adjustments.

IME, the Fatboy does everything a touch better than the 12-3DR, especially in the bass region. Inner detail is improved with a better sound stage. Imho, the 12-3DR is more forgiving on poor recordings.

I don’t believe that you will be disappointed with the Fatboy upgrade. The improvements will be noticeable. In addition, the Fatboy combines the best of both worlds, a 3D printed arm wand, and a precision metal bearing housing and end stub.

Hi Mike
Congrats on the coming new tonearm. Curious, why unipivot over gimbal? (I'm considering moving from 3d to fatboy)

Yes, you will need a new arm rest but I think it comes with one. Also, ask your dealer to make sure that your Fatboy comes with the additional counter weight plate that attaches to the main counter weight. This will give you more options with cartridges of varying weights. Don’t forget the optional second pivot, imho, it makes setup so much easier plus the benefit of improved performance.

Would a Prime be a good platform for a Fatboy upgrade or should I look into a TT upgrade altogether such as the Prime Signature?

Also, are there any good trade-in options as I would not be able to stretch to the full price on a Fatboy of $4k :o Wonder what one would typically get for the 3D 10” arm...?

Cheers,
Vin.
