Herron VTPH-2 tubes

Postby jmcox » Sat Oct 24, 2020 4:14 pm

I would love some feedback from other Herron VTPH-2 owners with respect to tubes that they found that worked optimally in their unit. I should say that although historically I've loved to tube roll with all my other equipment, I'm somewhat hesitant to roll with this unit because it's performing so darn well !!! But you know how all things audio are - always tweaking !!!! Any thoughts from other Herron owners ?

Dont mess with success. :)

The only tube change that Ive kept is using the new EH 7025 tubes instead of the EH 12AX7. This is only
because my stock EH 12AX7 tubes were a bit noisy. The EH 7025 measured quieter and each triode matched/balanced well.

EH also has the new 12AT7WC I would like to try but am happy with the 1970s Ei 12AT7.

YMMV.

I have rolled many tube combination in the Herron vtph-2a and have settled on the following.

RCA triple mica 5751 black plates into a pair of Phillips Miniwatt 12at7. The unity gain is a GE 1602.

Hey Brent, I do recall some exchanges from you about your owning a Herron and I'm glad that you have already apparently done a lot of trail runs with various tube combos. I have literally drawers of tubes, including many 12ax7/5751 variants, but not a single 12at7. I am thinking that maybe you like the 5751 variant because of low noise ? (I seem to recall that they are a little less gain ?).

Anyway I'm going to undertake finding all three of your tube types . . . .exactly (!) . . . . and avail myself of your acquired experience! I actually enjoy seeking out and finding cool old NOS tubes so actually I'll enjoy it !

Thanks for your recommendations.

Hi Brent - as a follow-up to my quest (!), I reached out to one of my favorite NOS tube sources in regard to the three tube types you mentioned and he replied back with questions in regard to two of the tube selections. His comments were as below . . . . Do you know anything more about the Phillips or the GE tubes ?

1) RCA triple mica 5751 black plates (pair) >>> Available...OK!

2) Phillips Miniwatt 12at7 (pair) >>> w/ gold pins? Could you provide more detailed info ?

3) GE 1602 (single) >>> Is that a "10Y" ? Could you provide more detailed info ?

Thanks !!!!

I have attached a picture of the RCA 5751 and GE 1602 Five Star. The Phillip that I use are made in Holland with the Heerlen delta codes and gold pins (basically the same tubes as an Amperex Bugle Boy)

Thanks a million my friend !!!

Actually my supplier did ask for photos but I thought that was just too much to ask . . . . . Thank you so much for going to all this trouble to help. I already sent him your info and photos. This guy I'm talking to is Koray Kural at http://www.nostubestore.com - He's all the way out in Turkey and he seems to get a lot of NATO material . . . . Great source of EURO sourced stuff. Let's see what he comes up with !!!! Over the years I found him to be my favorite NOS tube source. Thanks again.

Brf (and anyone else who has tried), are you getting a little less gain with the 5751's in place of the 12AX7's? I don't need all the gain the VTPH-2 produces, as my pickups are very high output (5mv!). Frank Van Alstine used 5751's in his modified Dynaco PAS, and that pre was the quietest tube pre-amp I've ever owned.

Yes, the 5751 has a lower mu than the 12AX7 and is used in the gain stage of the unit, therefore, it will produce less overall gain.

I have used 5751's to good effect so long as you don't need the full gain. At that time, they were much less money than comparable 12ax7's, but its been a few years so prices may have caught up.
