It is hard to say for sure until we know the effective mass of the Fatboy. Assuming that the Fatboy does have a higher effective mass than the 12-3DR, it should make fora better match for heavier anlow(er) compliance cartridges when compared to the 12-3DR.

So I have a 10" 3D arm and an unused 10.5" metal arm.

Do you accept multiple trade-ins towards a Fatboy?

Unfortunately, I am stuck at 10" - a Super Scoutmaster won't take a 12".

Just received a flyer from Soundstage Direct that they have the Fatboy in various sizes and will work a trade. You may want to check their site and/or call for additional information.

So, no matter what size the Fat Boy is, it is $3999? A 12" trade-in would leave a less than net-to-buyer than a 10" trade-in.

I don’t get how a Fatboy is the same price as a Prime? If I put one on my Prime does its performance double?

Yes, all Fatboys are $3900 regardless of length due to the fact that each length is a limited production run, therefore, no specific length gets the benefit of economies of scale like the regular 10" 3D armwands. IMHO, a 75% MSRP trade-in allowance of your current JMW tonearm towards the purchase of the new Fatboy is almost unheard of in the audio industry.

Unfortunately, price to performance does not have a linear relationship. In audio, to get an incremental performance increase sometimes cost a small fortune. My rule of thumb is when contemplating an audio upgrade, is to allocate funds towards an item that will yield the greatest improvement. For some, the Fatboy will be the ticket and for others a cartridge upgrade will yield better performance.

Does a new arm support come with the Fatboy since it appears the current 3D supports won't be large enough?

I guess the better question is if it makes sense to move away from the SSM platform at this point or go with a 10" Fatboy.

Myles see you upgraded your Fatboy to the new style ..Still waiting for your review on your site ,,Soon ????

..........................................

That said, the Fatboy is damn good because the Fuuga is really singing in the system. Great cartridge that bears comparison to the best out there.

Myles,

Due to the fact you have also spent time with the ZYX Universe II for a review, what would be your "speculative" opinion of the performance of the ZYX Universe II mounted on the 12 inch Fatboy, mounted on an HRX table? Do you think the Fatboy is too heavy for the Universe II even with the "Silverback headshelll weight"? Current tonearm is the VPI 12 in 3DR, and since I am considering making that upgrade, I'm very, very, interested in your thoughts.
Thanks.
