Which Pulley for ADS & Classic 1 30th

Which Pulley for ADS & Classic 1 30th

Postby coldbusted » Wed Aug 28, 2019 8:28 pm

I own the Classic 1 30th Anniversary and purchased an ADS last week. Also, bought a VPI - HRX Pulley Upgrade For Use With VPI Motor Controller from
Music Direct:
https://www.musicdirect.com/analog-acce ... s-with-sds

The one I received looks like this:
http://www.elusivedisc.com/VPI-One-Spee ... VPI-A0013/

So they sent out a replacement and again received the same one as before so I installed it and the turntable plays very fast.

It does however play correctly if I use the original stock pulley that came with the Classic 1 on the smaller section.
Can it be used like this or is there another pulley that I should be using?

I think the issue is that the pulley you received is for a 300 rpm motor, whereas your turntable was delivered with a 600 rpm motor. I think the original (smaller) pulley is the correct one, but others may know better.

Yes, Classic 1 has 600 rpm motor so need to use the original pulley (smaller diameter).
If you want to use a single diameter pulley, you will need to try and find an old HRX pulley for the 600 rpm motor. You could ask VPI to see if they have any in the warehouse. I know they had one a few months ago as I bought it for my Classic 1.

Unless you intend to run multiple belts, the stock 600rpm pulley and the ADS will work just fine.

If you intend to use multiple belts with the HR-X pulley, you'd need to replace the stock 600 rpm motor with the 300 rpm version.

You can get the 300 rpm motor from Hurst directly. Either part # 3201-001 or 3228-001 is fine with the latter being a high-torque version of the former. Here is the URL:

I personally would choose 3201-001 as 3228-001 could produce excessive heat.

Edit:
Both motors require 115V 60Hz, so they are good only if you are in North America.

I have a Classic 2 SE from Music Direct. It has 2 phillip screws on the top of the plinth to hold the motor as apposed to having a plate and screws to hold the motor. Any idea how hard it would be to swap out the 600 rpm motor for the 3201-0001 motor. Thanks in advance.

The PA/PB series motors come with two different mounting types: square and diamond. I think the stock motor you have is the diamond mounting type. In this case, you'd need a 3201-006 instead as it is the diamond mounting equivalent of 3201-001 (a square mounting type).

However, before you proceed, do some sanity check with the drawings provided in the link above, especially spacing of the mounting screws.

Good advise mmai. I will take the bottom plate off and go from there. Thanks.
