Help regarding VPI anti-skating device

Postby lem321 » Wed May 15, 2019 8:15 pm

Forum members,

I'm using several uni-pivot VPI wands, a first generation 12" 3D wand and two 12.7 wands. One of the 12.7 wands does not have the black "ring" that sits in front of the counterweight and holds the fishline which attaches to the anti-skate device on the junction terminal. I don't really want to spend $100 to buy another AS kit. Has anyone come up with another method or device that would work in lieu of the black "ring"?

Thanks,
Wilson

Hi Wilson

You should contact VPI. They'll likely send you the correct d-ring itself for your arm at no charge.

You can construct one yourself by using a piece of fishing line attached to a rubber O-ring that slips over the end stub.

Thanks Madrac and Brf for your suggestions. I'll try contacting VPI first and then try the O-ring idea next.

I would get the D-ring .....to use an O ring would cant the arm out of alignment...the thread would not be pulling properly.

This is incorrect statement. I have done this and it works in the same manner as the D- ring attachment.

Brf,
Any pictures of the o-ring on your tonearm that may help illustrate how this works?

BRF....I yield to your knowledge, but to me, if the thread isn't properly located on the O-ring it would tilt the arm on its point, screwing up the azimuth as the cartridge travels in the groove. (unless the 2nd pivot is used)

I think the O-ring would work. You could probably use this in the interim whilst reaching out to VPI. I've gotten one from them before. You may need to provide SN of your tonearm (it's inside the bellhousing).

Sorry, I don’t have a picture readily available. An o-ring provides the exact same function as the d-ring. Even the fishing line is attached in the same plan as the d-ring.
