Distorting Kick Drum

Sorry for the slow reply and thanks for the great info Kurtster. That diagram is very useful, thank you.

I'm hearing the distortion when I push it too hard on busy, bassy tracks. I just took a reading with my RadioShack SPL meter (weighting C, slow response) and I am good up to about 88 dB. Anything over that starts to break up in busy, bassy sections. I guess I need to follow Golear's advice and keep it to around 85 dB max. Most music just sounds better loud though! I think all these years of loud metal concerts might have damaged my hearing!

Have I ever suggested that perhaps it's finally time to upgrade those speakers? ;)

I'm happy to report that I have resolved my issue. It occurred to me that my repaired MIMC Star now had quite a few hours on it and perhaps the suspension had settled some. The bass was sounding very full on many tracks and I had lost some high end air. So I moved the arm up two full turns of the VTA tower and now sounds much better. More air, and bass slightly less full. Also listening at max ~85dB. No more distorting kick drum.

Thanks for everyone's help.

P.S. Jonathan - doesn't I mean I don't still want new speakers eventually!

....and pretty soon, you'll be adjusting VTA for each LP. Enjoy! :-)

Ha yes I can see myself doing that. I really can hear it when it's just not "right".
