Custom Super Scoutmaster

Custom Super Scoutmaster

Postby farmstar72 » Tue May 15, 2018 10:05 am

Starting this thread to show my custom Super Scoutmaster plinth. I wanted to make my own so I could easily swap tonearms. I made the plinth on a CNC router out of 3 layers of MDF. The armboard is shaped like a mirror of the motor cover on a HW-19. Once my design is finalized, I plan to wrap it in hardwood to look like a Classic with an SSM footprint. This will allow the use of any motor too.

farmstar72,

Very nice craftsmanship!
If you're targeting the SuperScoutmaster, I suspect you will not really be satisfied until you add the HRX dual motor/flywheel, with rim drive.

Looks to be a fun and rewarding project. Please post some pictures of the finished product.

Did you ever consider using Baltic Birch ply over MDF and a substrate?

Hi Brf,
Actually, I hadn't considered Birch ply but I think I will now :D
That might strike a nice balance for aesthetics to labor involved. - Thanks

I have a couple pieces of MDF to use up first by then I should have my final design and will make one with Baltic Birch ply and a Delrin armboard.
- Should be able to find a nice stain to really spruce it up

Remember, Plywood can have voids not visible in the edge plys. It's been said this will result in a resonance (and I can see how/why). Good Baltic Birch Ply is better, I've been told. You get what you pay for, so a nod to this possibility is worth consideration.

It's made of 3 layers. The middle is hollowed out so it can be filled with lead-shot or something
