SPECIAL VAS NOVA/HW CARTRIDGE

Am I correct when I assume your Nova Mono uses the same elliptical stylus used on the Nova/HW? If so, I've been listening to the same cartridge now for the past six or seven months and have found it to sound quite stunning. I've no other fancy mono cartridges with which to compare it but it totally blew away my nude Quintet Mono. After I installed mine, it took about a week before I went back and played any stereo LP's.

Correct, polished elliptical. Have to tell you guys, just recorded Doris Day "Hooray for Hollywood" 1959 mono Columbia at 24-192 using the VAS/MONO and that USB stick will now become my standard for female vocals. They really nailed the human voice back in the early days of stereo when they did it mono.

Yes , it is. Never played, never used, mint 1959 condition. What a joy!
Just did the same thing with a mono Count Basie "Blues in Orbit" in mint condition. Very impressed with this cartridge and very close to my reference the Zero.

Cheez, I have a copy of that somewhere! I think I got it from an uncle. Near as I remember it was in near mint condition. I'll have to dig through my stacks and find it. :)

Isn't Blues in Orbit Ellington?

Duke Ellington at his best. Just recorded Ellington Jazz Party, original mono. WOW, they really new what they were doing in mono back then.

Fatboy poorly rendered recordings

Postby marechalney » Sat Feb 16, 2019 11:37 am

Hi Harry,
Have you tried seeing what a Fatboy can do with a poorly recorded lp? Listening to Brahms' densely orchestrated
Piano Concerto No. 1 on RCA featuring the peerless team of Gilels/Reiner/CSO, a recording whose sound was charitably described as "carnivorous" by one critic, with my new Fatboy unipivot armed with my middle aged
Kiseki Purple Heart I was astounded by the improvement. I'll skip the jargon and simply say that this great performance, formerly mired in mush, is now eminently listenable and that I couldn't be more delighted. Thanks
to VPI, and to Bob Herman of Lyric HiFi.

Is 1.5g still the recommended starting point for tracking force on the .4mV elliptical using a 12" gimbal Fatboy?
