What HW pefers may not be your preference. Gimbal and Uni-pivots each have their own strengths and weakness, therefore, it all comes down to personal preference.

Impossible to give an informed opinion as the 40th Anniversary is not in production as of yet.

If it were my decision, I would wait until the release of the VPI 40ADDT. By all accounts, you are getting a final destination turntable for $12K. I know that $12K is a lot of money, but when you compare it with what's available at that price point, it will be considered a bargain, plus it comes with the $5600 12" gimbaled Fatboy!

One question is, will the 40DD accept or come with the peripheral ring?

I have a fair amount of not perfectly flat vinyl that the ring smooths right out, and I'd hate to give it up.

My dealer says VPI told them it will be at least another month until my Fatboy arrives, so hopefully they will make some sort of announcement between now and then.

I don't want to cancel my order, as if I upgrade my tonearm I wouldn't want to miss out on the trade-in offer for my current 10.5" 3D.

I'm guessing it will use the Classic/Prime platter, so yes.

That would be my "guess" also, since VPI would want to maximize economies of scale by modifying the Classic platter. Certainly, the added weight of the periphery weight should not pose a problem for the high torque DD motor.

It will use the Classic/Prime platter diameter so the P. Ring will work perfectly on it. BTW, start up with the new controller is less than 1 second!! Plus, when you turn it off it stops using back emf braking.

Very excited about this!

Well I warned my dealer I may not be taking delivery of my 10" Fatboy if you announce the 40th DD between now and then and asked them to make sure I wasn't leaving them in an awkward place with the tonearm if that happens.

Harry wrote:Different animal. The Avenger is designed to take up to three arms, is highly adaptable to different arms (something our customers do), and is a sand box that you can bring all your toys into. The DD is a one stop shop for the user that just wants to enjoy music. That same DD motor and drive in the Avenger chassis would be more expensive than the Reference Avenger.

The customer base is completely different. I use a gimbal Fat Boy now and change arms to change cartridges on my Classic Direct, takes more time than the uni-pivot but I find it easier long term, most would not. It really is a matter of taste and how much you want to play.

You could easily live with either one, both are SOTA and both are very, very musical. The $12K price is for the first 400 to celebrate the anniversary.

Harry, how much more difficult do you find interchanging the Gimbal fatboy (for another a gimbal arm) on your Classic Direct compared to a unipivot? I would prefer the same setup, but not exactly sure how tedious the process is to change/swap Gimbal tonearm for another. Does the nut simply loosen under the tower and does it require a lot of torque to tighten for the Gimbal arm to work effectively? Any tips on this or advice? Was curious as you stated it was easier long-term for you, but unsure exactly what you meant by that.

Fischerd, it's very simple. Unloosen the nut (requires only as much force as you use to tighten it - I tightened mine down good but it's no big hassle to loosen it up), pull the arm off, pop the new one on (assuming you have more than one), put the nut back on and tighten it up. Assuming you didn't shift the mounting plate (check the P2S!), you're good. Of course you may need to adjust VTA and AS for the new arm, but you'd have to do that for the uni too.
