How do you guys feel about the sound of the 10" 3D vs the 10" 3DR ? Worth upgrading ?

jmcox,

I am surprised you have not received a reply. I have not owned a non-3DR arm, only the 12" 3DR. What you would be paying for is the arms Nordost wiring, instead of the Discovery wire, which is an upgrade you "should" be able to hear. Maybe some owners of both 10" arms will respond soon.

I would have answered, but did not. I do have both. However, I've set up different cartridges on each and it would not be fair to say one is better than the other.

I personally rewired my tonearm from standard wire the Nordost Reference Wire when I had a Prime. I was able to hear a noticeable difference between the two. I noticed things such as symbols or chimes became more pronounced and clear. The low end also became tighter and the overall sound was a bit more focused. There were other small differences but truth be told it's been over a year since I switched and those are the difference that I remember from switching. From talking with other VPI family members, it tends to make more of a difference when the rest of your system has silver type cables.

Mark, that makes sense I guess in terms of whether or not the rest of the the system is wired via silver or copper. In my case 100% of my interconnects and my speaker cables are copper Kimber Select, so maybe the synergistic impact from the Nordost wiring might not be very impactful.

Thanks guys

You could also have VPI wire your Tone Arm with VALHALLA 2 ,,

Some prefer the Discovery wiring over the Nordost.

Can't speak for the 10", but the 12" 3DR was well worth the price of admission.

I have the original JMW 10 arm and have not heard a 3D arm. I did have it rewired and first impressions were "wow!' for the reasons Marc gave. It's all true. In the end though, there was a trade-off. The super midrange in-the-room presence that made vocals so captivating, especially noticeable on my Beatles albums, was the casualty. :| YMMV
