Azimuth results vary with different test records

Azimuth results vary with different test records

Postby Ayre Conditioned » Sat Nov 04, 2017 9:17 pm

I previously set azimuth using the CBS Laboratories STR140 test record which has the 1k tones at the very end of the record. I just bought the Analogue Productions test LP which has the 1k tones at the beginning of the record and got completely different results. The cartridge is close to perpendicular now which makes me feel better about things. The sound quality has improved dramatically. Anyone care to speculate as to why there would be a difference?

Differences that relate to anti-skating forces that change from outer to inner grooves, perhaps? If you *really* wanna get compulsive about this, buy the Clearaudio azimuth setting LP: it's got two sides full of 1000hz tracks for testing fun and joy.

No, thanks. I’d like to keep what little hair I’ve got left on my head.

Ayre - I found that proper azimuth compared to "about right" reveals a major difference. I use the Fozgometer which is a wonderful tool to get it really right.

I don't think test LPs are as precise as they should be (or we want to be).

I did, with amazing results. And without test equipment.
