Harbeth 7ES-3 owners

Postby gene9p » Sun Jul 09, 2017 10:12 am

The bug has bitten again. I am currently using Bryston "MINI" T's but jumped at some Harbeth 7ES-3's.I had a set of the Habeth P3's for a short period of time. I liked the sound but they were too small for me so I moved them and replaced them with the Bryston's. The Bryston's are 4 ohm speakers so I had to up my amp from a Parasound Halo 125 per channel to the A21 250 per channel 400 at 4 ohms. Gene Rubin accepted my offer on some ugly finish, not defective, cherry Harbeth 7's. It seems they are ugly ducklings compared to the other cherry speakers because of the wood's natural grain. I can tell you the deal was way too low to post but if pm'd I will reply. Anyone here using Harbeth's? I've read many reviews over the years and saw some of the larger Harbeth's at some shows as well as my experience with the 3's. What do you think of them..

Don't see anything on 7ESR-3, have you got 7ES-3s. They get uniformly good reviews, but need stands and a little help on the low end. Rich

I love my Harbeth C7s. I bought them used in Dec 2015. I do not use a sub, my room is small 9x14 7' ceilings with a lot of acoustic treatments from GiK Acoustics.

thanks..I read that one along with many others in the past when getting my P3's a couple of years ago.. Now I am re -reading them and of course the you tube videos. LOL. Gene Rubin notified me he will be shipping them Tuesday or Wednesday so I should have them by week's end or early next week as it is a cross country delivery from CA to NY. It will be interesting to compare them to the big Bryston's mini t's. Looking forward to how they sound with the Mac tube pre amp and Manley Chinook phono.

i just noticed that you swapped Brystons for Harbeths. It's an interesting choice. Both are of the British school of speaker design, and should sound quite similar, except the Brystons are a little flatter and go lower. Both are accurate. Both get good reviews based mostly on the same sonic characteristics. However, the look of the Brystons is not for everyone, and they're large for standmounts. The Harbeths are better proportioned and have a nicer natural wood finish. I'd be interested to hear your thinking. Rich

I will post updates as I go along. The Bryston's are big , heavy , solid 3 way speakers that are hard to drive but very rewarding with proper power and placement. I also use the plugs in the back to tame the bass. The plugs come from Axiom who build the speakers for Bryston up in Canada. They too needed quite some time to break in even though Bryston claims only a short period is required.

Looking forward to your impressions. For me Harbeth starts where the search ends. Very personal though, I go for comfort.

Arrived today. they are 35th anniversary with full new warranty. The wood grain has a faded look to it but it's not the speakers just the grain beneath. I placed them on the low stands for the Bryston's to start. First thing I noticed was how damn heavy those Bryston's are...lol. I put on a cd, Misty, by the Yamamoto Trio while the Chinook warmed up. Incredible sound. I turned down the Bass a bit which was on the plus side for the Brystons and everything fell right into place. The sound is VERY different than the Bryston's but in a way I really like. The Harbeth's remind me of my first set of speakers by Audio Analyst back in 76. They were big and boxy 3 ways, not much to look at, but fantastic sound. Needless to say my first impression is that the 7's are ...WOW. I popped on a few LP's that included Diana Krall , Dire Straits and an old Mono of Sinatra. Oh boy, it's gonna break my heart to sell the Bryston's. Both speakers give huge sound stages with the Brystons being more tighter and detailed, more along the line of high end audio but it took a lot for me to get them where they are. The Harbeths on the other hand have benefited right off the bat from all my upgrades and tweaks. I just placed them on the stands and bam...they just exploded out of the gate and provided the old fashioned sound I fell in love with years ago. I was so close to buying the 7's but went with the 3's instead few years ago. In a way I am glad I did because of all the speakers that I had in my home and got to listen to b4 Bryston's. Not to mention all the gear changes. Gotta go listen to some more music on the 7's......
