SUT or SS LOMC preamp

SUT or SS LOMC preamp

Postby Jazzgene » Thu Sep 01, 2016 12:55 am

Getting an itch to try a SUT on my Miyajima Kansui. Anyone have opinions yay or nay on SUTs vs solid state active phono preamps? for example, like the RCM Sensor 2? Or Sutherland Duo vs Miyajima KSW SUT.

For low output carts like your Kansui, I prefer SUTs.

Thanks for your reply. I guess in the end, I will have to try it myself to really know. I've heard a lot of great things about Bob's Devices SUTs. The Miyajima KSW is designed to match with the Kansui so I may give that a go.

If you are using the Miyajima cartridge, the Miyajima SUT should be better. However, it won't be if you ever decide to try a different cartridge manufacturer down the road. It will limit your options quite a bit perhaps, depending on cartridge specs of impedance and output.

I know that Robin Wyatt personally uses Bob's Devices SUTs with the Mayajima Cartridges, even though he sells Miyajima SUTs. Disclosure: This is Bob from Bob's Devices. Check with Robin Wyatt to confirm. He is the importer for Miyajima cartridges. http://www.robyattaudio.com info@robyattaudio.com

Yes, of course, that would be the case. But I can then just use my current phono preamp which is quite versatile. On the other hand, I see Miyajima has a new SUT out. Looks quite impressive and flexible to accommodate many LOMC cartridges. http://www.miyajima-lab.com/etr-stereo.html

If you are handy with a soldering iron and comfortable putting together DIY electronics here's something relatively inexpensive you might be interested in doing to evaluate the effects of a SUT in your system:
http://10audio.com/diy_jensen44.htm

I have a CJ PV-8 preamp (circa 1990) which has sufficient gain in the phono stage to take a low output MC straight in. There are fans of simple 47K ohm loading so I tried this, and in my room the volume control doesn't need to go much beyond 1:00 o'clock (from ~8:00 or so.) I was eventually curious to see the effects of adding a SUT, so I built one based on Jerry Seigel's project using the Jensen JT-44K-DX transformers.

Art Dudley of Stereophile has long been a fan of SUTs. He recently reviewed a phono preamp which incorporates the same Jensen trannies:

I am a bit handy with DIY. I'll have to look into it. I see some swear by the SUT over active phono preamps. Others look at SUT as something from the way past and is against it... hmmm Guess trying it out is the only way to go.

I love my VPI SUT by Bob from Bob's Devices. See his earlier post. Mounting right at the tonearm is just such an elegant solution.

+1 for Bob's SUT. I used it to great effect when I had my Manley Chinook. SUPERB product and support!
