KEF Reference 1 and My Amp

KEF Reference 1 and My Amp

Postby Dorian » Fri Jan 17, 2020 12:11 pm

Hi there all

I’m considering trialing the KEF Reference 1s but I’ve read they can be hard to drive. Do you think my tube integrated amp would drive them well?

The KEFs are rated 85dB sensitivity and Impedance 8Ω (min. 3.2Ω). The website does say amp requirements are 50-200W and my Primaluna is rated 85Wpc into 8Ω in ultra linear mode with KT120s installed.

My room is 16' 4" x 12' 4" with 9' ceiling.

Thoughts?

Have you been able to find an impedance / frequency plot? On the surface, not an ideal match. Does your Primaluna have a 4 ohm tap? I would give Kevin Deal a quick call.

Thanks for the reply Brf. I haven't looked for an impedance / frequency plot. Yes the Primaluna does have a 4 ohm tap. Good idea to call Kevin, thanks.

I don't think your amp is up to the task. A good 4 ohm rated solid state amp would probably be better, one that can output at least 200w into 4 ohms.

Against all advice here, I bough the KEFs! Got some advice to the contrary on the SHF. Just picked them up last night, will set them up on the weekend. Will report back with listening impressions.

From what I’ve read they appear to be excellent speakers and very well built. Looking forward to your listening impressions. Enjoy them!

Thanks Brf, yes I had only read excellent reviews and the feedback on the hoffman forum was also excellent, even from guys using tubes to drive them. Fingers crossed!

Sure they'll play, but to get the sound they can give, a better amp/preamp is needed
