Great Sounding "Alternative" Music on Vinyl

Great Sounding "Alternative" Music on Vinyl

Postby Dorian » Thu Mar 16, 2017 4:21 pm

I am looking for more new "alternative" music that sounds great on vinyl, i.e. very good mastering and pressing quality. Here are some examples that I've acquired recently, can anyone suggest more please?

Jamiroquai - Rock Dust Light Star (European pressing from Amazon UK, US pressing terrible I sent it back)

Jamiroquai - recent Music on Vinyl reissues of first four albums, all sound excellent

Daft Punk - Random Access Memories

Beck - Morning Glory

City and Colour - If I Should Go Before You (brilliant album and sound quality, strong recommendation)

The War On Drugs - Lost in the Dream

David Bowie - Blackstar (a masterpiece, nothing else to say)

I guess there aren't any alternative fans here! I will try the Steve Hoffman forum.

I guess it depends on your definition of Alternative. I have a fair bit of 80's new wave that I quite like. Not all of it is that great sounding as far as recording quality, but is still good music. One album that I think is particularly fun is Big Pig - Bonk. I also scored a beautiful copy of Concrete Blonde - s/t that sounds startlingly different from my CD. I think the vinyl pressings of R.E.M. - Murmur and Document sound better than any CD versions that I've heard, including a MoFi, if memory serves.

I'm not generally as interested in newer albums released on vinyl since the mastering often isn't as good, and nearly everything is recorded to digital anyway, so I almost prefer the hi-res digital if available (Bowie Blackstar, Pink Floyd - Endless River, etc.).

One alternative album that I'm dying to pick up but just haven't is Jeff Buckley's Grace on 45RPM. While I'm a bit tired of the album, I'm anxious to hear it properly mastered from the original master tapes (all other versions I've heard are kind of harsh).

Thanks Packgrog. I have that Jeff Buckley Grace 45rpm version and it sounds stunning. You can easily hear his breaths in quiet passages. I heard detail that I have not heard before.

I would consider this alternative-Smashing Pumpkins "Siamese Dream" double lp is great. I also recently picked up the Natural Born Killers Soundtrack, and it was really good too. I hope these are considered alternative.

How about alternative and (sadly) obscure? This is a friend's band and their second album is on vinyl:

Black Sabbath and Jimi Hendrix albums pressed at Quality Record Pressing.
The first four Black Sabbath albums sounds amazing. Excellent remasters.

It really depends on what your definition of Alternative is :)

Personally, I'd suggest to take a look at these two albums.

Brand New - Deja Entendu
The XX - xx

Also, I love the City and Colour album!

I'm not sure what genre I would classify James Blake as but his Overgrown album is something to be heard.
