Need Help Choosing My VPI. Clasic 2se or Aries 3

Postby Pilrem » Thu Aug 03, 2017 5:09 pm

Hello,

For many years I have been enamored with VPI turntables but have not been able to afford one. Now I have a couple of opportunities that I could swing and I am looking for sage advice. My Options:

Demo VPI Classic 2 SE - about $2600.00

Used VPI Aries 3 completely upgraded, platter, motor, ring clamp, etc. About $3400.00

I don not see much online about the Aries 3 and I am wondering if this a great table or is it over-engineered? I will be mounting my very low hours Lyra Delos on what I decide to buy. BTW, I am upgrading from a Music Hall mmf 9.1if this matters any. My phono pre is a ARC PH-8 and my Pre is a ARC LS-27 so I think that my system is up to these tables. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Well, there is really no wrong answer, they are both great tables, but if it was my money, I would go for the Aries 3 hands down.

I don't see the Aries 3 on the VPI site as a production table. Is this one "out of print" so to speak? Thanks.

Correct, we are no longer making the Aries 3 or Aries 3D. We recently came out with the Aries 3D FE (Final Edition) that was limited to a certain amount of tables and those all sold this year.

So the powers to be must not have thought that much of the Aries? Or is there a different reason it is no longer made? It really looks like a cool table and people seem to like it's performance.
