Classic 1 vs Scout 1.1/2.o

Classic 1 vs Scout 1.1/2.o

Postby myomerantz » Sun Jan 06, 2019 4:50 pm

I am looking for a VPI turntable. My choices are somewhat limited by my wife's aesthetic view of turntables ( i.e. doesn't like the sculpted plinth). So I am choosing between some new old stock Classic 1's and new old stock Scout 1.1 or 2.0 ( not the current Scout).
I have read great reviews of both and wonder what the community thinks of these two choices. Would probably upgrade the tonearm on the Scout; and thinking of SoundSmith Zephyr vs Dynavector 20 by 2.
My system currently: Luxman PD 284 table, Grado Red cartridge, Leben CS 600 tube amplifier, LFD phono stage and vintage Spendor SP1 speakers which have been given new life from the Leben ( incredible pairing).
The scout would work better with respect to cabinetry but the question remains would I be giving up too much sonically. (One VPI dealer suggested just the opposite but he also has an old Scout 1.1 demo to sell- gotta love retail).
Appreciate the advise,

PS: I also posted on Harry's corner only to realize this might be a better spot to start.

I haven't heard either but the Classic is higher up the VPI range, so I would go for that. I'm sure Brf and others can comment more.

I can’t make a direct comparison since I upgraded from an HW-19 Jr to an older Scout 2 model, but I’m convinced that the classic platter made the most difference. Also, I think a cart improvement will also take you a long way.

That being said, I would go (in terms of quality) Classic 1, Scout 2 then the Scout 1.1. Of course, YMMV: e.g., if somebody offered a 1.1 in good shape for $10, of course I’d go for it... ;)

Good luck in your audio hunt!
