Looking to Replace an Oracle Delphi V with VPI

Looking to Replace an Oracle Delphi V with VPI

Postby Acmar » Sat Jan 13, 2018 9:46 pm

I am a newcomer to the forum, and hopefully, to VPI family. I’m looking for advice as to which VPI turntable I should get to replace an Oracle Delphi V/SME 309 that I’ve been enjoying for the past 18 years. To be honest; the only reason I’m considering replacing my Oracle is due to the turntable’s motor, and the power supply crapped out recently. I called Oracle Audio, and they recommended upgrading to Delphi VII for roughly $5K; therefore, I am taking the opportunity to look at VPI. My taste in Music is purely classical. What I’m looking for is tonal accuracy and soundstage. Over the years, I’ve fine-tuned my Oracle to give me a lovely, accurate sound with a wide and deep soundstage. BTW; I have a Grado Reference Series 2 Cartridge, which I will move over to a new turntable if need be. I know this may be a hard question to answer, but I am hoping that someone out there can guide me as to which VPI Model I should consider.

I hope someone can help me.

Thanks!

The general consensus on this forum appears to be that the Prime (not the Prime Signature) is the sweet spot in the range and the best value for money. I can tell you that I've had mine for over a year now and it is fantastic.

Acmar, I would argue for a beautiful Classic 3 built by Harry. :D See the Classifieds in Mat's Corner for mine if you're interested.

Yes, shameless plug but it's a great table.
Pass XP-20, AVA 600R, Shahinian Diapasons, PS Audio DMP & DS, VPI Avenger with 12" 3DR, Benz SL and L2, SS Zephyr Mk.2, Ortofon Quintet Mono, Pass XP-15, Logitech Touch, RSA Haley and PSA conditioning, PAD and AZ cables.

Viewing the A'gon add for the Ares, I see where the seller lists a 12" 3D arm. Is this accurate? I was under the impression the the Ares Plinth could not accommodate a 12" Tonearm.

Just curious...

Good deal on the Prime Sig too, assuming its in good shape. I wonder what "certified pre-owned" actually means at SSD?

My guess is that it's a Trade In, that was originally sold by SSD.

The reason I ask is, that in a picture of the A'gon Add, the seller is measuring from the end of the Tonearm Stub to the Head Shell. I was under the impression that the Tonearm should be measured from the "Bell" or Pivot point to the Head shell.

I stuck a Tape on my 10" 3D Arm and it measured identical to the one pictured in the Add...
