Logging Phono Cartridge Hours

I'm pretty sure I posted this image before; but in case I haven't, here is my combination air pressure regulator and hour meter. It tracks hours when the table is actually turning so it over "records" cartridge hours by a bit.

For some reason I can't see the picture you posted. Try it again.

This has happened a few times B4. I'll upload it as an attachment. I don't understand why I can see it but you can't. I wonder if there is "private" setting I've got enabled or something?

Now I can see it. That's pretty sharp looking.

So, I decided to take my own advise and build a Hour Meter to keep track of the hours (or there abouts) my cartridge is used. Since I only bought the Soundsmith Voice a bit more than a month ago, and it has about 32 hours of playtime on it, now's a good time. Leave the meter on overnight, and I'm almost there.

I searched that auction site and found a simple, non-resetable meter that runs on 120VAC or there abouts. Cost was $23 and change. (http://www.ebay.com/itm/381935322055?_t ... EBIDX%3AIT)

I had the perfect box on hand, but its available from Digikey for $21 and change (search on part number 1455N1201BK-ND).

The rest of the stuff was on hand except a 'Y' style power cable for $4. So we're talking about $50 total.

This is what I came up with (below the platform):

I run it from the ADS, so when the motor is turning, it's accumulating time. Using the 'Y' power cord between the ADS, the motor and the hour meter works perfectly. I used a LCD meter as they are silent. It draws a few nanoamps, so load on the ADS is zilch from the meter.

There are more expensive hour meters on the bay which are resetable (in the $70 range) if you want to go that route. Took about 2 hours to put the whole box together. I used a Dremel tool to cut the opening for the meter. Nothing to it.

If you can't find it - build it!

Jim

P.S. I checked, it keeps accurate time at either 33 or 45 RPM settings.

That's pretty much what I did. I used a triple tap adaptor for taking power from my SDS. Yours looks a bit more refined than mine! Nice.

It's easy when you know how. I just built these phono cables. I used Silicon Jacketed 2 conductor mic cable, sheathed in silver plated braid and sleeved in PET braid. Pamona Gold plated connectors and soldered with Mundorf 4 metal alloy (Tin/Copper/Silver/Gold) solder.

The silver outer braid is used for the ground lugs.

I measured the capacitance at less than 1 nano farad for the cable length. Both channels.

This is the test bench:
