Aries 3 - Hum when playing at 45 issue

Aries 3 - Hum when playing at 45 issue

Postby Pilrem » Sat Nov 25, 2017 4:49 pm

I am looking for help dealing with an issue when playing records at 45 rpm. When I play at 45 there is a medium pitched hum that is not there if I play the same record at 33. I have tried slowing down the record when playing at 45 and the hum pitch stays constant so I think that this is an electronics issue and not a mechanical one. I have tried different records and have experienced the same result( 45s and 33s). Perhaps this is an SDS issue? I can provide more details if required... I never have any issues playing at 33 and my system is dead quiet. I love the sound and this Aries 3 is awesome.

Turntable: VPI Aries 3 with super platter, single motor flywheel, ring clamp, SDS, upgraded feet. XLR junction box, No anti-skate.
Cartridge: Lyra Delos
System: ARC PH-8 Phono Pre at 58db gain 500 ohm, ARC LS-27 Preamp (input at high gain), Musical Fidelity M6prx amp, B&W 803S, Audioquest Niagara and Water interconnects all XLR, Audioquest Pikes Peak bi-wire.

If someone can point me in the right direction I would appreciate it.

Hi ,

Have you tried cueing the tonearm /cartridge combo on a record w/ o the platter spinning . The SDS set at 45 rpm .Unmute the PH8 & LS 27 . Is there hum ? This happened to me but it was both at 33 & 45 rpm . The cause was the rubber footing of my dual motor flywheel assembly . This have harden. It’s was transmitting noise and it was audible . Upon replacement of the footing , problem solved . Hope this helps

I placed the single flywheel motor on a mouse pad and it helped about 90%. Much less hum. This brings about a few questions I hope that someone can answer:

Better options than a mouse pad? This just seems Mickey Mouse for such an expensive piece of gear.

New feet for single flywheel motor? Are these available?

Single motor flywheel lubrication? I see postings about lubricating the flywheel. How do I lubricate the motor?
