capacitor value to fix power switch popping

capacitor value to fix power switch popping

Postby ggergm » Thu Jun 13, 2019 11:15 am

I own an older Classic2 with the 600 RPM motor. I'm using it with a SDS. As I live in rural Minnesota, they are both obviously 115V pieces.

I have a turntable maintenance day coming up. As long as I'm addressing other issues, it's time for me to eliminate the pop I get when I stop the turntable with the turntable's power switch.

Searching the forum, I see that it is not unusual to have to upgrade the capacitor across the power switch when using a SDS. Or maybe the current capacitor has died. In any case, I want to replace it.

Nowhere in my searches did I find a value for the capacitor, either stock or upgraded. Can somebody help me with that information?

Contact VPI directly, and they'll send you the correct capacitor.

Replace the current cap with a 0.68 mf cap. Better yet, send VPI an email describing your issue and they will send you a replacement cap.

Thanks, @Brf, for the value. I have a whole bunch of mylar caps lying around. By installing a .47μF and two .1μF caps in parallel, I will end up with .67μF total capacitance. They are all rated at 100VDC, which should be more than big enough. I'll give that a try. If it doesn't solve the problem, I will email VPI for assistance.

The original cap across the switch was .001 uF which works with 90% of the systems out there. If it does not raise it to .01 uF and it should solve the pop problem.

Well, there you go. Thanks, Harry. I have caps that size laying around here, too. 8-)
