Questions on Avenger Rim Drive

Questions on Avenger Rim Drive

Postby vienna acoustics » Sat Feb 16, 2019 2:39 pm

Hi,

I have some questions on the rim drive, thank you in advance for your responses:

1. Are the pulleys tapered?
2. Is there any benefit on installing 4 belts instead of the two?
3. Are there any hints on rim drive setup/installation?

Thanks again

No

2. Is there any benefit on installing 4 belts instead of the two?

I could not discern any improvement using 4 belts. With the Rim drive, you have 2 diametrically opposed 24-pole 300rpm synchronous motors driving a heavy mass flywheel using relatively short compliant belts. The dual motor using belts to drive the rim does produce a "lossy" drive system, but the effects are mitigated by the use of short belts and the use of dual motors. With dual diametrically opposed motors, each motor's belt drive is 180 degrees from one another which creates equal pulling motion (see figure A) which significantly reduces belt deflection which results in a more linear transfer of power. In addition, the mass of the flywheel acts as a filter to resist slight changes in rotational energy.

3. Are there any hints on rim drive setup/installation?

1) Make sure the rim drives rides on the top flat portion of the bottom drive platter. Don't use the drive platter's belt grooves
2) Make sure that the rim drive is 100% level with the platter. Use a bullseye bubble level on top of the rim drive. I replaced my rim drive feet with height adjustable feet for fine tuning
3) Make sure that the rim drive just kisses the platter. Use a flashlight and back light the rim drive interface and make sure that the rim drive is in constant contact with the platter. When powering down the rim drive, the platter should spin freely for a couple of revolutions
4) Place Herbie's gamgbuster washers (or similar) between the rim drive's bottom plate and rim drive body.

I would also search the forum for other tip etcs.

Thank you Brent,

All noted.
I have the fly wheel perfectly leveled with the drive platter, and the correct pressure is verified with software measuring the wow and flutter and speed

I just wanted to make sure that I hadn’t forget any small detail.

Perhaps, although I have never tried it.
