HW 19 MK 3 platter upgrade

Hey everyone I am thinking about upgrading my platter from the mk3 to the mk4. I am noticing that the MK4 platter jpgradeonly weighs 2 pounds 4 ounces more than what I have. Is it the aluminum that makes the difference? I thought there would have been a bigger difference in weight.

There is a lot more than just the weight difference between the Mk3 and Mk4 platter. The Mk4 has a much more superior bearing plus it has the tri-point bearing/platter interface. The platter construction between the two platters is also different. The Mk3 is single layered acrylic platter with a lead ring insert whereas the Mk4 is a multi-layered acrylic platter with a lead insert which improves the platter's damping properties.

IMHO and IME, the Mk4 is a substantial upgrade. Also, if you decide to go for the Mk4 platter, you will need the thicker arm board or a tonearm spacer to account for the taller platter.

I was looking at the mk3 to mk4 upgrade from exclusive disk. It looks to be an aluminum platter. Are they selling a MK4 platter?

That's basically the Scout 1.1 platter. It's not the Mk4 platter. If you are patient, you can find these occasionally for about $300 as Scout owners upgrade to the Classic platter.

The platter BRF was describing looks like this:

The platter above is a latter production TNT platter.

The HW19 Mk4 platter looks like this

So my platter looks like it is an MK4 it weighs 10 pounds.

handinglove, your platter is the version that came on the HW-19 Mk.2 and Mk.3---an approximately 3/4" thick Delrin disc with a layer of lead inset into it's bottom, then covered with a thin layer of cork. The HW-19 Mk.4 platter was the same, only thicker (1.5" I believe), as brf's photo of one shows. The platter you are interested in is not an HW-19 platter (though it can be installed on one), it's from the Scout table. To be able to use the Scout platter on an HW-19, the 1" bearing housing hole in the 19's floating sub-chassis must be enlarged to accommodate the larger (1.25"?) hole required by the Scout's bearing housing.

Another option is to patiently wait for an Aries 1 platter & bearing to come up for sale. That platter is one some VPI owners prefer to the all-aluminum platters, and is comprised of a 3/8" top layer of Delrin combined with a 7/8" bottom layer of aluminum with a lead insert, covered in cork. That platter came with a 1" threaded stainless steel bearing housing, therefore requires no drilling of the HW-19's sub-chassis to install. That's what I did, and couldn't be happier. They sell (second-hand only, of course) for no more than a new Scout platter, so the choice is yours.

By the way, the platter spinblackcircle posted a pic of is from the TNT-5, and is comprised of a 3/4" top layer of Delrin and a 5/8" bottom layer of stainless steel, with no lead insert. The TNT-1 had the same platter as the HW-19 MK.4, the TNT-2, -3, and -4 the same platter as the Aries 1. Some of the TNT-2, -3, and -4 bearing housings were the 1" threaded stainless steel version found on the Aries 1, some were 1.25" aluminum with 3 holes in the housing's flange for mounting screws. Confusing, ain't it?!

Thank you everyone for the information. It was confusing but it has been made clearer. I will look for the Aries platter wish me luck. I am guessing they don't come up for sale very often. Happy spinning everyone.
