JMW 12.7 metal Wand to upgrade to Gimbal FatBoy

Postby 930turbo » Tue Jul 17, 2018 7:35 pm

Hi guys ,

To the felllow members who upgraded from the JMW 12.7 metal Wand ( w/ Unipivot bearing w/ cup ) to the FatBoy Gimbal Arm Wand , did one replace the arm rest ? When one removes the Unipivot bearing how is the gimbal bearing arm fixed to the VTA Base ?

Thanks in advance ,

See picture below. The Fatboy comes with a new tonearm support pillar to accommodate the larger diameter armwand.

Great picture!

Looks like the gimbal Fatboy is using the counterweight adjustment mechanism as is used on the Levinson/VPI.

I can give a hearty THUMBS UP! It is so easy to get a perfect and precise tracking force with this mechanism that this feature alone would be worth upgrading for.

Does the unipivot Fatboy also include the screw mechanism to move the counterweight? For me, this and the gimbal really simplified set up.

Also, do you know if there will be alternative counterweights? The 10” 3D Printed arm on the Levinson/VPI had to be adjusted nearly against its limit for the stock Ortofon Cadenza Bronze that came with it. I added a thumb screw so that I could move the counterweight closer to the pivot rather than butt up against the stop.

I saw a post that the tone arm holder has to be replaced to ,,Fat Boy is to fat to fit in the clamp

Hi Johnny,

I can help with most of the questions here:

1. I would need to check with Mat/Harry on this. If I'm not mistaken a JMW-12 Uni-Pivot Fatboy would be around 12g Effective Mass.

2. We use the Nordost Reference Wire in the Fatboy.

3. It does come with a dual pivot and it would be an add-on like the current.

4. You would use the same uni-pivot assembly. Unless you have the version with the damping cup. If you have that you may need to update to our newer style pivot assembly. You may also need to change the Arm Rest but I'm almost positive this comes with a new Arm Rest.

5. It does have an option for a heavier counterweight for heavy cartridges. If you are concerned please let the dealer know ahead of time what the weight of your cartridge is so we can make sure we provide the proper counterweight.

If you have any other questions please let me know.

The uni-pivot version has the same counterweight system as the gimbal

My understanding is that there are alternate counterweights available to allow the end user to match their cartridge
